Fair Oaks Family,
We are diving into spring and continuing our unit on frogs! We have learned so much about how frogs move and where they live, and this week we will be looking specifically at the ponds where frogs live. We will be making sensory bags that look like water, making a frog habitat out of paper, and writing our pen pals letters with all of the cool facts we have learned. We are so excited for the things we are going to learn this week! As we get to the end of the school year, let me know if you would like me to make some materials to keep practicing with your child over the summer! I would love to partner with you so that you and your child can have fun and continue learning over the break! There are lots of field trips coming up! Please check your child's folder for permission slips and updates. We hope you had a restful spring break! We are so excited to get back in the classroom and rock out these last six weeks of school! In honor of spring, we will be starting a unit this week on spring animals! The first animal we will look at is the frog. We will be reading "999 Tadpoles" and we will be learning about the life cycle of the frog. Students will be learning frog related vocabulary, building sentences in an adapted story, going on shape hunts, and counting lily pads! I will be sending home a copy of the frog song we are singing in class so you can sing it with your student at home! Make sure to check you child's folder for field trip permission slips forms. We are very busy is K-2 MOID celebrating the first full week of spring. We have been graphing the weather and we can see how the weather is changing. This week, we will continue to read our anchor text of "In like a Lion, Out like a Lamb." This story allows us to build sentences, find shapes, and answer wh- questions. We have enjoyed studying weather so much! Don't forget to talk about the weather with your child over spring break! This week we will be traveling to Osborne High School to participate in Adapted PE field day. Our class works so hard in ADPE, and we can't wait to show off all the skills we have learned! We are even more excited to see some friends that were in our class last year! Last week was one for the books! Our class got to study chefs, and we also got to meet our pen pals that we have been writing to and video chatting with all week! It was such a meaningful social experience for both classes, and I will be printing and sending home pictures with the students as soon as possible. Feel free to talk with your child about their experience bowling with their new friends. I'm sure it will put a smile on their faces! This week we are celebrating the changing of the seasons by jumping into our two week unit on weather! We keep track of the weather every day in our class, and I know the students are going to be excited to read and learn about it over the next ten days. Try and have daily conversations about the weather with your child. March is going to be such an exciting month for us in K-2 MOID. We are continuing our community helpers unit, and we have so many trips and activities to do this month! This week we will be learning about the doctor. Students will get a chance to pretend to be a doctor and learn about all of the tools that a doctor uses. We will also explore the different shapes you can find in the doctor's office, and we will count different items in the office too! Last week we had so much fun at the fire station. Our class learned so much about how they help our community! I will be sending home pictures later this week! Another exciting week here at school! We are busy talking about community helpers, and this week's community helper is a postal worker! This week, we will be reading about a postal worker and what they do to help our community. We will even get a chance to act like a postal worker during Valentine delivery on Thursday. Students will practice writing letters to their loved ones and delivering them. On Thursday, February 14th, we invite parents to come eat lunch with us! Our lunch time is 12:10 and we will be eating in the cafeteria. Let me know in your child's folder if you will be attending. We would love to have you join us! This week we will say goodbye to January and hello to February! We finished up a unit on penguins, and this week we begin our unit on community helpers! We are so excited to read about different helpers in our communities and what they do. We will start off by reading a fictional story called "Career Day" we will work on identifying the different community helpers and answering wh- questions. In math we will sort community helpers and work on counting different community signs. In science we will be talking about shadows we can find in the community. In social studies, we will be talking about how we are community helpers when we work at our coffee cart! I am so excited to launch our cart and get the kids involved! Stay tuned for some pictures of our fabulous baristas serving our school community! Next week, we will be inviting parents to pick a date to come have a valentine's day lunch with us in the classroom. If you want to join us for lunch on the 12th, 13th, or 14th, let us know by sending a message in your child's folder! Our class has been excited and so engaged during story time, and we can't wait to continue our study of penguins by reading a non fiction book about their lives next week! We will be discussing the penguin life cycle, graphing different stages of the life cycle, and writing facts about penguins. This week at home, try and work on these skills with your child: Literacy: matching/identifying letters "can you point to the letter ___" Math: touching objects as they are counted "touch one, touch two, etc." Science: talk about how babies grow up and become kids that grow up and become adults Social studies: practice different ways of greeting friends and family In addition to our continued exploration of penguins, I am so excited to share with you that our class, along with SNPK and 3-5 MOID are starting a coffee cart in our school! This opportunity is very unique for our students in an elementary setting and we cannot wait to use the coffee cart to practice social skills, increasing inclusion in the school community, and improve our communication skills. Next week we will be learning all about the coffee cart: how to make coffee, how to greet others, and how to provide fearless service! This is a huge project, and we are excited about the collaboration we will have with administrators, speech teachers, and the rest of the school community.
